Roots Series

The vulnerability etched in every curve, texture, and inlay serves as a reminder: through confrontation and understanding of our deepest pains, we can truly transcend, finding both healing and a profound sense of self.

Gordon Johnson Art contemporary sculpture, a modern mixed media art series Roots by Ottawa artist Timothy Gordon Johnson

About the series

Sculpted from rich mahogany or walnut, the bases are textured by hand to evoke the ruggedness of nature and steeped in a deep ebony tone bearing the beautiful scars of their creation. The dark hues are enhanced with loving kiss of an open torch’s flame that resonates with both the primal instincts of nature and the artist’s touch.
Emerging from these organic foundations, the solid brass components tell their own tale. They are revealed and rise, as if excavated from layers of memory and time, twisting elegantly and melodically upwards. Their graceful ascent embodies the hopeful narrative of rebirth and renewal.
These elements of golden resilience meander and reach out, portraying the unwavering spirit of hope even in the face of life's tumultuous journey. The brass, with its inherent lustre and strength, serves as a metaphor for the indomitable human spirit: always pushing upwards, always seeking the light, and always resilient to the best of our ability in the face of adversity.
The sculptures are a conduit of the artist's own journey of healing and personal growth, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the visceral experience of unearthing their roots.
The vulnerability etched in every curve, texture, and inlay serves as a reminder: through confrontation and understanding of our deepest pains, we can truly transcend, finding both healing and a profound sense of self.
